Comments
Comments: Trail was unbroken from jct with Table Rock, which I suspected. Heavy, dense snow that balled quickly and coated your shoes, 6-8 inches down low, 8-12 inches higher up. The steep section up West Peak was tough, as I kept sliding back with every step. Halfway up, the trail was in the trees, and the carwash began. I had hoped the warmer temps yesterday and high wind would have knocked the snow off the trees, but it did not, so pushing through the trees also meant being showered with snow. A few hundred yards from the summit the snow had drifted in the trail corridor right up to the tops of the trees, and I had to crawl for a stretch on hand and knee. Summit was drifted heavily, and I had hoped to bag East Peak, but there was no sign of a trail or a corridor. Being alone, and knowing the descent into the saddle is steep, I decided to call it a day. Views were fantastic, could see forever. Heading back, the high snow pack offered some peek-a-views of the Presis behind Old Speck. Even heading back was hard work, as only four other people were out on the trail, and the snow didn't consolidate that well; it was still sticky mashed potatoes that snowballed and weighed you down. Great day out in the woods, though.
