The trail is well consolidated down low but still a little soft. I think the colder temps has kept the snow from packing into a sidewalk, so snowshoes are still the footwear of choice. We were the first ones on the trail and there was a inch or two of fluff coating everything. We used snowshoes from car to car. Up higher the snow depth was deeper. The sides of the trail measured over 3 feet (up to the handle on Scott's poles). Above 3300 feet, we encountered more substantial drifting and the snow was slick and powdery. We plowed through and made it to the West Peak. The East peak is totally unbroken right now and with the slick powder, we knew it would be slow going and with a time constraint, we left that one for another day. The descent was a combination of walking and snowshoe skiing, punctuated with a lot of hooting and hollering as we slid. It was a great day to be in the mountains! |
