access to the bowmantown area is difficult with all the obvious driving routes in north of parmanchenee lake being gated either by the bosebuck camp or private land owners. as a bosebuck guest one could access some of the gates, but likely could not get far enough in to the peaks to make the expense worth while. thus we opted to approach from nh off of east inlet road. we drove in past the side road to boundary pond for a few minutes parking at an old log landing. i believe this is something like 13 miles, give or take, from rt 3 in pittsburg. east inlet road was in great shape until it makes its descent from the shoulder of kent, roughly 8 miles, at which point it got a little rough. mid clearance or high clearance would have no problem. smaller cars would need to drive with care in spots. past the road into boundary pond the road got notably rougher and driving past where we parked would have gotten more interesting.
worth noting that there are multiple hunting seasons going on in both nh and me so blaze orange and care are suggested. |

from where we parked we took a line on a road that wraps around the north and west sides of bowman hill and hit the woods. going was mostly good in open woods with some wet spots to avoid. after crossing two drainages we popped out on the road that we then followed northeast to an intersection south of barker. from that 3 way interesection we started our bushwhack up barker through a heavily logged area. the woods were quite wet today with muddy footing on the skid roads. above the logging we hit spruch woods with steeper grades. nearing the summit the spruce got a little scrappy only notable today due to the woods being wet. we were soon at the recognized highpoint and from there we continued north to the border swath in good woods. we turned east on the swath and found relatively good footing with the sentiers frontaliers hiking trail coming in and out of the swath at multiple points. we continued to the sag at mounument 472 and left the swath south on an overgrown road until we had a good shot at twin peaks heading due east. grades were moderate with lots of hobblebush and fern woods until the cone of the west peak where it turned to spruce. we left the west bump initially trending north around a cliff then headed east to the east peak and the recognized highpoint. were it a clear day there would have been potential views. we doubled back around the west peak then headed down the southwest ridge to set ourselves up for a potential ascent of barker pond peak. more logged woods most of the way down to a road east of pond brook. we continued down bushwhacking across pond brook then up across another road before starting up barker pond peak. hardwood regrowth most of the way up made for ok going. after a couple steep pitches we levelled out and continued south to the recognized highpoint. leaving we took a direct line west through continuously logged forest and swampy woods to a road that ran us south of barker and back to the road we hiked over on around bowman hill. we followed the road back out and mostly recreated our bushwhack route back to nh and east inlet road where we parked. |
