To get to trailhead, from the intersection of rt 5 and rt 120 in Andover, follow rt 120 for about .6 and take left on South Arm Rd. Follow South Arm for about 9.7 miles, cross a bridge over Clearwater Brook and you will take the 2nd right on a gravel logging road, about 300 yards beyond the bridge. As d&d reported there is a grassy road just prior to the gravel road and not to be taken. Zero out trip meter. Follow the gravel road for .4 miles and bear left. Follow to 1.1 miles and bear right at a fork. Drive to 3.0 miles and park at landing area, for most vehicles this will be as far as you can go without and ATV or large tread tires. We walked up the continuation of the gravel road for about .3 miles bearing left (uphill) where the 'road' goes straight. This road eventually ends and the BW begins at the left back corner. The beginning is pretty easy to follow on what must have been an old skidder road. As this road disappears the herd paths continue. Out line brought us into the col between Elephant and another peak (labeled Elephant on the maps). The Col is a marshy area but was really dry at this time and we picked up the herd path on the other side. We found one that took us straight to the canister. The register is in good shape and it was fun to read comments from previous hikers. Saw my entry from Feb of 2013, Elephant Trunk and Spatula are still there, Took pics and then headed back down, The path we descended on was a bit southerly from going in and the moose knew how to easily get through the small rock ledges and fir line we encountered on our ascent, hooked up with our inbound track eventually. What a beautiful fall day, sunny and temps reaching the 70's |
