Our Presidents' Day trek up Elephant Mt. began at -1 degree with a ski/hike up Elephant Mt. Rd. (not plowed) 3 miles to the usual summer trailhead, packs on my sled. 5-7 inches of powder over a snowmobile track base. Left our sled/skis and switched to snowshoes for the bushwhack. At times we found good openings--so much different/tougher in winter than summer--and also had numerous false starts trying to find a reasonable line through the thick, snow-covered spruce/fir. 2-3 ft of snow up high. Definitely some steep, gnarly going at times. Glad to reach the summit cannister complete with elephant trunk and spatula. We appreciated the spatula for helping us open the cannister, as we had no burgers to flip. Last entry 3+ wks prior, then Veteran's Day prior to that; more moose than hikers. Skiing down Elephant Mt Rd the last 3 miles was glorious and fun, glad we brought the skis - a great way to end the day. |
