Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Success Pond Road is not only full of the usual rocks sticking up which low clearance vehicles must avoid, but there are lots of "potholes" familiar to anyone living on a gravel road after rains. The first major hill is very bony from water running down it instead of to the sides. On our drive out in heavy rain water was rushing down the road in many places instead of into the ditches. It badly needs a grading to bring the side gravel into the center, and to make it crown properly. Driving a car on it now would be very slow and tedious; I am very thankful Marty drove us in with his pickup. There wasn't a lot of traffic on Success Pond Rd, but a few of the ATV riders moved pretty fast.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All signs in place. No major blowdowns. Only a few brushy areas. There are several mud spots on the Mahoosucs trail that are significant. We hunted around for buried stones and planks and found some, others we went around. Having said this these trails have received a lot of work over the years; it is amazing to see all of it. There was a lot of new work on Carlo Col. Kudos to those responsible.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: There are some wood ladders and several iron rebar steps set in rock which would be difficult for dogs, and very hard to carry a dog up. Pepper is quite good on stairs, and found a way around the rebar steps going up a ledge, and didn't need them going down the ledges. There are a fair number of steep ledge and/or boulder sections that might also be problematic for many dogs. Most of the hike Pepper spent time waiting for us to catch up. It must be nice to have four wheel drive and a low center of gravity. Due to the cloud cover and early on rain, Pepper only used a few of the many available sip n dips.
Bugs
Bugs: Very few; basically not an issue.

Comments
Comments: We avoided the forecast of hot and humid weather further south, by going north and getting rained on in the morning. But that was preferable and we actually hiked in pretty comfortable conditions. After the rain cleared the views were wonderful, with clouds in the valleys and remnants moving elsewhere. I love this section of the Mahoosucs; it is fun hiking and the vistas are great. The sun only came out for brief periods, and there was a nice breeze on top, so it stayed comfy. We saw only a few other hikers (AT hikers) all day and they were fun to chat with when we did. We got a ride from a nice guy with 3 dogs from Success Pond for the past 2 miles or so of the road walk, which turned out to be a great gift, because the cold front brought hail and downpours as we drove out. Thank you sir. It was a fun day, much better than I expected with a hot and humid forecast. The Mahoosucs are such a great place to hike.
