Trails: Holland Glen Loop
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 28, 2023
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There is now a small, circular parking area; no more roadside parking. It’s not terribly clear where to park in this little circle but room for at least a few conscientiously parked cars before it might begin to overflow. I was the only car there at 4:15pm. One other about 25min later.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Small bridge at the loop jct down low. Trivial rock hop where the loop crossed the brook up high though the intentionally placed rocks could become submerged in very high water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Note that the trail has been rerouted and turned into a loop so it doesn’t quite fit the guidebook’s description (more on that below). The trail is regularly blazed in yellow but a few parts that are a bit obscure. The trail has yet to seem terribly well travelled. I don’t think there were any blowdowns other than perhaps trivial stepovers.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Dogs are allowed and there’s guidelines posted for you and them on the kiosk. I can’t remember if it said they had to be leashed or not. Good trail for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Not too bad.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: 3rd redline on my second full day in Monson MA with family after Laughing Brook Sanctuary and Silvio O Conte Fish and Wildlife Refuge: Fannie Stebbins Unit earlier today. Note that the trail now forms a loop. It also appears to have been rerouted slightly. There are signs where it crosses over the brook above the falls, asking you to stay on the trail and respect landowners wishes. Additionally, the trail on the west side (the one described in the guidebook) no longer seems to give you a view of the falls. You only see the falls along the east side (or at least I did…). The falls were not terribly impressive given the lack of water right now but was nice nonetheless.

Trails were mostly dry, grades east-moderate, and footing decent. Gaia had me at just over a mile with just under 200ft of gain.
