Comments
Comments: The reservation staff apparently do not respond to queries sent to the phone number or email listed at https://www.mass.gov/locations/purgatory-chasm-state-reservation . I had to contact mass.parks@mass.gov to find out whether the Chasm was open. On Tues Nov 23 they told me the Chasm Loop Trail would be open during the Thanksgiving weekend, but when we arrived on Nov 27 it was closed, presumably because of the rain and trace of snow on Nov 26, even though things had mostly dried out by Nov 27 afternoon. The other five trails in the reservation were open for use, however. All the trails were well marked and easy to follow, with helpful signs at intersections. We saw about ten other groups of visitors during our 4-mile hike along all the trails, so not so crowded at this time of year. We had the picnic tables at the playing field to ourselves.
