Public service announcement: anyone looking to observe social distancing should stay far, far away from the Wachusett Mountain visitor center and the trails directly connecting to it.
Harrington Trail up only had isolated solo hikers and groups of up to 3, all of whom were courteous about making sure we stayed several feet apart if someone needed to pass. There was also plenty of space at the summit to be able to take in the views without getting near other people. Taking the Pine Hill/Bicentennial Trail down was a mistake. It required stopping every minute or two to step off the trail and let groups of up to 8 people slowly walk past. At one point, someone was sitting for several minutes in the direct center of the trail, taking pictures and being generally oblivious to those around her.
Trail conditions were fine: minimal ice in places, but nothing that required traction. The summit road is currently impassable to foot travel due to several feet of snow remaining on the ski trails. |
