Clouds around my head! Sure wish I brought my head net yesterday, after the heavy rains on Sat and the moist, cloudy conditions the bugs were ravenous! |

Good hiking day for me but I didn't see a single soul on a 17.5 mile hike except for where I started and ended at Bash Bish Falls. I did see a big snake on the South Taconic Trail where I've heard of them being on the past. I marked the trail with branches both before and after the rock he was sitting on so if you come upon a few branches crossing the trail around N 42.09670, W 73.50297 you'll know why. He was waiting on the other side of a big rock in the trail I was about to step up onto. Assuming he was waiting to ambush a little critter for breakfast, but it was almost me. :-) I believe it was a black timber rattler based on the classic pit viper head shape, scales and markings but his tail was tucked under the rock so I couldn't see it and didn't want to tick him off enough to see if he could rattle. He didn't seem to care about me so long as I walked around him... and I gave him a wide berth! Trail was relatively dry with no mud but the trail is considerably overgrown with the grass and berry bushes very long and so after day of rain, my shorts, thighs and legs were soaked from pushing through them. That meant all the water ran down my legs and into my boots until I could hear squishing sounds as I stepped I was so wet. |
