Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, October 7, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot at the trailhead on Under Mountain Road in Copake, NY was full so we parked along the road. There is a smaller lot that holds 3 cars a bit uphill that was full too. Note: the trailhead sign says Alander Mountain Trail, but my 9th edition AMC guide and map (yep, one edition outdated) refer to this trail as Alander Brook Trail.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Alander Brook goes under the trail through a large culvert. There are no water crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The AMC Massachusetts Trail Guide and its Map 2 were extremely helpful bordering on essential for our first hike on these trails. All of the trails are blazed, but some of the trail intersections are confusing, and that's where the blazes may be missing. Alander Loop Trail has brushed in some with scratchy scrub oaks but is passable. We got on this trail at its north end (no sign); the south end has a Trail Closed sign. No other problems were visible. Alander Brook Trail has some slippery accumulated leaves.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Traildoggies, beware of hunting seasons in each state you go to, and take proper precautions.
Bugs
Bugs: There were some around on this warm October day but none were biting.

Comments
Comments: This is a fun and scenic loop about 4.7 miles long with 1550 feet elevation gain. There is some hiking along exposed ridgelines with good views, and nice forest trails.

In the morning as we were hiking up the Alander Brook Trail, we met a fully adorned and equipped bow hunter hiking down. He told us that the season opened in NY last weekend, and he said that we do not look anything like deer so not to worry.
