The final portion of Thiel Road (accessible from the Adams, MA side of Greylock) is closed to cars with a barrier. We parked in the Gould Rd parking area quite a distance from the barrier and about 200 feet from the intersection of Gould Rd and Thiel Rd so that our car would be readily visible to passersby. |

Finding the initial part of the Thunderbolt from the end of the closed to motor vehicles portion of Thiel Rd proved difficult due to lack of clear signs and blazing. Took some trial and error and false starts to get on the correct trail. |

No problems except that some sections of the Thunderbolt Trail are steep. |

Sky mostly clear, temps mostly in 70s. Parked at Gould Rd parking area (on the eastern side of Mt. Greylock in town of Adams) some distance from the trailhead. Thiel Rd, the way to the Thunderbolt Trail, is a dead end and the final section is blocked off to motor vehicles. Toward the end of Thiel Rd, we had some difficulty finding the start of the foot trail to access the Thunderbolt Trail. Signage did not appear clear and the location of the trail did not seem to match well to our map. We went through some trial and error to find the trail. We thought blazing could be better. Further along Thunderbolt Rd/Trail where it makes a turn, we missed the turn due to inattention and got lost for about 30 minutes. Thunderbolt Trail follows an old ski slope, some of which is grass. It has some steep sections and in some of these it was slippery on the growth covered top soil. On the way back from the summit we diverted from Thunderbolt onto Bellows Pipe South which is a wide trail and then onto what we think is Roost Trail going northerly to get back to Thunderbolt Trail. The northerly trail we took to get back to Thunderbolt was narrow and heavily grown over with up to waist high grass/weeds- no doubt a haven for Ticks and we think to be avoided. |
